Introduction
Mining in Iran's Economy

Iran Holds a Unique Position in Global Mineral Reserves

The mining sector is a key advantage in our national economy. The abundance and diversity of Iran's God-given mineral resources has placed the country in a distinguished position in global reserve rankings. With respect to mineral variety, Iran ranks among the top 10 countries in the world.

Decorative and façade stone is a natural material that — after extraction, cutting, and polishing — is used in interior and exterior cladding, or formed into columns, railings, steps, fireplaces and more across building projects. These stones must meet specific criteria: physical and chemical resistance, precise color, and appropriate porosity for use in the construction industry.

Iran undoubtedly holds vast reserves of ornamental and façade stones spread across the country, with remarkable variety in composition, color, and texture — making them ideal for export-driven, non-oil economic growth.

Historical Background

Stone in the Story of Human Civilization

Ornamental and building stones have always captivated humanity — it is no coincidence that entire epochs of human history bear the name of stone. Decorative stone mines command a special standing in global consumption markets.

Today, after centuries of tradition, Iran has claimed the world's third-largest position in ornamental stone production. Over 5,000 industrial units are active in the decorative stone sector, and Iranian stone graces the facades of landmark towers in China, Italy, and the United States.

In recent years, the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade has focused on transitioning extraction methods from conventional blasting to fully mechanized processes — elevating stone quality and boosting Iran's competitiveness in international markets.

Decorative Stone Characteristics

Decorative & Façade Stone

Decorative and façade stone is a natural material used in interior and exterior cladding after extraction, cutting, and polishing. It appears as columns, column capitals, railings, steps, fireplaces, and more throughout architecture worldwide.

From a petrographic perspective, ornamental stones belong to one of three groups — igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary — and include marble, marblite, onyx, conglomerate, travertine, sandstone, granite, diorite, syenite, and gabbro.

Iran possesses enormous reserves of ornamental and building stone spread across the country, with extensive variety in composition, color, and texture — representing a significant non-oil export opportunity.

About the Region

Climate, Social & Geographic Conditions

The name "Marvdasht" was most likely derived from the lush plains and meadows of the region. In Farsnameh, this Balkhi text names Marvdasht as one of the districts of the ancient city of Istakhr — a place that over time gave way to the gardens and surrounds of Persepolis.

"Marv" in classical Persian means meadow or pasture. Marvdasht is one of the northern cities of Fars Province, sitting at 1,620 meters above sea level across an area of 4,649 square kilometers, comprising 4 administrative districts.

According to the 2011 census, the county's population stood at 1,370,087. The city center of Marvdasht lies at 52°48′ E longitude and 29°52′ N latitude, at an elevation of 1,595 meters above sea level.

Owing to its natural characteristics and strategic position, Marvdasht has grown rapidly and is now considered the second-largest city in Fars Province. Its favorable commercial position and quality of life conditions make it a city in sustained growth.
